The Dirty Dust: Cré na Cille

Sunday, April 23 | 5:30 PM

“The Irish novel that’s so good people were scared to translate it ... ‘The Dirty Dust’ is a feat of translation: vigorous and fun.” The New Yorker

“A wonderfully vivid and vigorous translation.” – John Banville

Máirtín Ó Cadhain’s début novel, Cré na Cille, has been hailed as the greatest novel to be written in the Irish language. But for almost seventy years, it remained untranslated into English. Novelist, playwright, and scholar Alan Titley’s vigorous new translation, full of the brio and guts of Ó Cadhain’s original, at last brings the pleasures of this great satirical novel to the far wider audience it deserves.

At this bilingual event, Alan will join us to discuss his experience reclaiming one of Ireland’s masterpieces, with actor Fergal Titley reading in translation.
