As Above, So Below

As Above, So Below reconsiders the folklore and customs from the west coast of Ireland. Artist Marie Connole focuses on the mythical Cill Stíopháin, a drowned village in Liscannor Bay said to become visible for one day every seven years, which shares striking parallels with the fabled islands of Atlantis and Hy-Brasil. Connole distills the essence of this tale, and others from her home place in County Clare, through the lens of memory, personal narrative, and history. Working with sacred iconography and archetypal symbols, she reimagines a personal legacy through delicate drawings and watercolors. 

Marie Connole is a visual artist and teacher from Co. Clare whose work has featured in eva International, Aughty Public Art Projects, the National Gallery of Ireland, Tulca, and with Ground Up Artists Collective (GUAC). She has received a number of residency and bursary awards including support by Clare County Arts Office, the Arts Council of Ireland and Culture Ireland, and features in public and private collections.
