Overview

Anne Johnson, Wednesdays, 6pm–7pm

8 weekly sessions beginning September 25

In this course, students who enjoy singing Irish songs will learn some basic chord progressions to accompany themselves on whatever instrument they have: guitar, piano, harp, mandolin, bouzouki, tenor banjo, concertina, et al. (It should be an instrument that can play chords!) We’ll also discuss ways to make simple chords more interesting by using rhythm, applying what we learn to four or five Irish folk songs in various tempos and styles.

This class is appropriate for:

  • All levels of singers
  • People with little or no experience accompanying themselves but who already play at least at a beginner level (you should know a few chords on your instrument)
  • Non-singing instrumentalists who want to learn how to accompany singers

(Please note: Although we will discuss how to choose chords to go with a song, this is not a music theory course, and no background in music theory is needed.)
