Overview

Reservations for the 2:30pm and 4pm talks have sold out, but some tickets may be available at the door.

This symposium is being held in conjunction with Reclaiming a Space, by Diana Copperwhite, Erin Lawlor, Helen O'Leary, and Dannielle Tegeder. Meet the artists behind our building-wide exhibition and special guests art historian Dr. Angela Griffith and artist, writer, educator, and critic Jason Stopa.

1:00pm // Informal meet and greet
The Devlin Café at Irish Arts Center will be open. Come early, mingle with other symposium attendees, and see the work.

1:30pm // "Painting as Environment” with Jason Stopa
This talk looks closely at the overlooked modernities in the visual arts landscapes of Brazil, Japan, France, and America, and further reflects on expanded painting practices taking place today.

2:30pm // “In the Abstract: Ireland, Arts, Modernism, and Identities" with Dr. Angela Griffith
This lecture looks at how artists in Ireland responded to developments in modern and abstract painting over the last 100 years. It will examine its reception, and will consider how meaning and identity was, and is, expressed in painting. This lecture is programmed as a companion to the exhibition Reclaiming a Space, curated by Diana Copperwhite, which centers Irish visual artist work in abstract painting in conversation with the diaspora.

3:30pm // Coffee break
A short break between conversations, during which guests can enjoy coffee, tea, and small bites in the Library.

4:00pm // Artist talk
Diana Copperwhite, Erin Lawlor, Helen O’Leary, and Dannielle Tegeder, moderated by Dr. Angela Griffith and Jason Stopa.

5:30pm // Reception
Join us for a reception in the café to celebrate the exhibition, with delicious food and drink from the Devlin Cafe, operated by Ardesia Wine Bar.
