Overview

Utsav Lal, piano
Sam Comerford, flute
Nitin Mitta, tabla

In a collaboration both cultural homage and discovery, Utsav Lal, Sam Comerford, and Nitin Mitta mine the repertoires of Indian classical and Irish traditional music to create a brilliant metamorphosis of form. Reels and jigs whirl into jhala patterns, slow airs swell into alap phrases, and the roots of the genres are woven to intoxicating crescendos inspired by the polyphonic heart of modern day Ireland.

Ragas to Reels debuted to acclaim at Ireland’s National Concert Hall in 2009 and later toured to the UK and India, where it was the centerpiece for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Embassy of Ireland in 2014. Ever exploring, the artists introduce new compositions in the American premiere.

"High energy meeting of the East and West...finding areas of commonality and overlap where previously it seemed that none existed.”—Terry Blain
