Overview

One of the world’s most expressive and virtuosic musicians, fiddle player Martin Hayes returns to Irish Arts Center for a week-long residency.

On Wednesday, April 25, Martin is joined by his longtime collaborator Dennis Cahill as part of an extraordinary triple-bill Gala Concert Event also featuring Camille O’Sullivan and Declan O’Rourke, with special guests including Gabriel Byrne and Paul Muldoon.

Then on Thursday, we invite you to join us for a captivating Person Place Thing to hear Martin and former Bloomberg Deputy Mayor and renowned national political strategist Howard Wolfson speak about their passions in a live podcast with Randy Cohen. The residency continues with three concert evenings featuring Martin and special guest artists, each brilliantly curated by the artist in residence himself.

Gala Concert: Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill, Camille O'Sullivan, and Declan O'Rourke
Wednesday, April 25 | 7:45pm at Symphony Space

Person Place Thing
Thursday, April 26 | 7:30pm at Irish Arts Center (FREE)
Martin joins four-time Emmy award-winner Randy Cohen and former Bloomberg Deputy Mayor and renowned national political strategist Howard Wolfson for a live podcast of "Person Place Thing." Cohen's interview show is based on this idea: people are particularly engaging when they speak not directly about themselves, but about one person, one place, and one thing they care about. The two met when Hayes was interviewed by Wolfson for his former music and politics blog, GothamAcme, in which they explored their mutual passion for Irish music. Martin will have his fiddle along and perform a few tunes as well. The evening will end witn an audience Q&A.

Martin Hayes featuring Tríona Marshall and Nic Gareiss
with Dennis Cahill and Marla Fibish

Friday, April 27 | 8pm at Irish Arts Center
Hailing from Portlaoise, Ireland, Tríona Marshall is a harpist with The Chieftains, with whom she has recorded four platinum-selling albums and made over twenty seven tours. With the band, she has collaborated with Sinéad Ó Connor, Ry Cooder, Moya Brennan, Bela Fleck, and Ricky Skaggs, among others. A former principal harpist with The RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Tríona attributes concerts by Martin Hayes and The Chieftains for igniting her passion for Irish traditional music. A highlight of the Friday night show will be a duet from Martin and Tríona called "The Spark and the Flame" written by her and Martin Tourish of Altan.

Martin Hayes: “You would typically think of the harp as ethereal or celestial, but Tríona is very powerful. People can expect the unexpected."

Nic Gareiss has been described as "the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. Nic has performed with such luminaries of contemporary traditional music as The Gloaming, The Chieftains,  Dervish, Solas, Genticorum, and jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, and is a member of the quartet, This is How we Fly.

Martin Hayes: "Nic's dancing is a thing of physical beauty, he is an incredible presence on stage.

She also made an album with legendary Irish singer and bouzouki player Jimmy Crowley called "The Morning Star."  This residency marks Marla's New York debut.

Martin Hayes: "I've known Marla for the last 25 years and I want the world to hear her! She's a joy to play with, she has unique rhythms and a wonderful understanding of traditional tunes."

Residency Finale: Martin Hayes featuring Dennis Cahill, Marla Fibish, and Tríona Marshall

Martin Hayes: "The four of us will have played together in different settings throughout the weekEach night will feature a different artist and instrument, with strings that are plucked or bowed. The final night should be a very special coming together as a full quartet."
