Overview

Grásta: Grace in Uncertainty

“When we were approached about Grásta, the words ‘uncertainty’ and ‘grace’ jumped out at us—the combination of fluidity and unease—and we immediately began to imagine a physical language for the project. We are interested in exploring the idea of ‘home’ and what that means to us as a society. Home can be a person, a thing, an idea. And what if you don’t have a home? Do we invent it?

“The main character’s journey in the film begins at a place of complete uncertainty as he travels through the Irish landscape with a small child. Their relationship is ambiguous; we see delicate, beautiful moments throughout. Their fragility brings a strength, which in turn propels a transformation in the man. The movement vocabulary will thread and weave throughout the story, making it a visually arresting component of the film.

“We’re excited to create In Velvet and embark further into the film world. The challenge of exploring a new practice and working with a new creative team comes at a particularly apt time in our current work.”

Choreographers and directors Jessica and Megan Kennedy from Junk Ensemble create a short dance film with cinematographer Luca Truffarelli, composer Michael Fleming, producer Zlata Filipovic, and dancer/actor Ryan O'Neill.

Premiered August 19, 2021.

Please note this film is being submitted to festivals and temporarily unavailable for public viewing.

An empty swimming pool. A car garage. A child sitting alone on a beach. A man approaches and they set off on a journey, driving through the Irish landscape of green parks and stunted suburbs. A herd of deer graze in the space between them with their antlers peeling away. It’s a shedding to transform into something new: a time of renewal. There is an unsettled empty space that hangs between them. Will they continue on the road together or separate.
