Overview

Patrick Mangan, Tuesdays, 6pm–7pm

8 weekly sessions beginning September 30

This class will be held in person in the Studio Classroom.

Join us for a semester focused on bowing, variation, and ornamentation including rolls, triplets, grace notes, double-stops, cross-bowing, and more. We will use a few tunes, in addition to scales and exercises, to explore and practice these concepts, and learn some fundamental rules about slurring in different types of tunes (reels, jigs, hornpipes, etc). We will also study melodic variations recorded by fiddle greats like Michael Coleman and Martin Hayes, and work on developing variations of our own. Learning by ear is encouraged—reading is not required—but sheet music will be provided, as well as recordings and other reference materials.

Instrument required. For information about instrument rentals and purchases, click here.

Please note that there will be no class on Tuesday, November 11, in observance of Veteran’s Day.
