Overview
Patrick Mangan, Thursdays, 6:30pm–7:30pm
8 weekly sessions beginning September 24
Join us for a semester of classes focused on bowing, variation, and ornamentation including rolls, triplets, double-stops, and more. We will use a few tunes, in addition to scales and exercises, to explore and practice these concepts. Students will gain proficiency in long rolls, short rolls, slurred triplets, single-bowed triplets, grace notes, double stops, and cross-bowing. We will learn some fundamental rules about slurring in different types of tunes (reels, jigs, hornpipes, etc). We will also study some melodic variations recorded by fiddle greats from Michael Coleman to Martin Hayes, and work on developing variations of our own. Learning by ear is encouraged—reading is not required—but sheet music will be provided, as well as recordings and other reference materials.
Instrument required. For information about instrument rentals and purchases, click here.
