Overview
Doireann Glackin (fiddle) and Sarah Flynn (concertina) perform their debut duet album, The Housekeepers, a collection of rare traditional Irish songs—original compositions and unique interpretations of common tunes—drawn from the repertoires of five seminal early 20th century women artists: Ella Mae O’Dwyer, Nora Hurley, Aggie Whyte, Ellen Galvin, and Mollie Myers Murphy.
With the exception of a small number who recorded commercially, women musicians of previous generations tend to be remembered as peripheral figures in the tradition, a historic sidelining unfaithful to their musicality, expertise, and the esteem in which they were held by their contemporaries. The Housekeepers explores the ways these artists occupied a place at the heart of traditional music communities—as performers in dance halls and social gatherings, céilí band leaders, educators, and composers—and strives to preserve their artistic legacy for generations to come.
