Step Dance I: Beginners (A)

Step Dance I: Beginners (B)

8 weekly sessions beginning Thursday, April 13th, 2017

A boot-camp introduction to the basics of Irish step dancing—absolutely no previous dance experience necessary. Dancers will learn the foundational form and technique of Irish dance, starting with the basic movements and progressing to light-shoe reels and jigs. You'll learn a few solo steps and we'll round out the session with a group dance, putting together all the pieces learned over the term!

Students should wear shorts or workout pants and a t-shirt. For footwear, sneakers, ballet shoes or Ghillies are best.

Step Dance II: Intermediate
Betty Sheehan, TCRG, Monday, 7 pm – 8 pm
$145 general / $115 member

8 weekly sessions beginning Monday, April 10th, 2017

Prerequisite: at least one semester of Beginning Step Dance or previous Irish Dance experience.

Students perfect the dances they already know, while learning more complicated steps and rhythms. Dancers in this class will work on both light and hard shoe dances.

Family Irish Step Dance I
Niall O’Leary, Wednesday, 6 pm – 7 pm

Price is per person: $130 general / $100 member

8 weekly sessions beginning Wednesday, April 12th, 2016

A great work out for the whole family, this class is meant for children and their caregivers to learn Irish step dancing together. Dancers are taught technique, form and style as well as dances such as the reel and the jig.

Students should wear comfortable shoes with leather soles that would be suitable for ballroom dancing.

Céilí Dance
Betty Sheehan, TCRG, Monday, 8 pm – 9 pm
$145 general / $115 member

8 weekly sessions beginning Monday, April 10th, 2017

With dances such as the Four-Hand Reel and the High Cauled Cap, céilís are traditional dances done in groups of 4, 8, or even 16 dancers. Beginners and experienced dancers alike will have fun while working on basic footwork, forms, technique, and musicality.

Set Dance
Dan Hunt, Tuesday, 7 pm – 8:30 pm
$120 general / $90 member

8 weekly sessions beginning Tuesday, April 11th, 2017

Students should wear comfortable shoes with leather soles that would be suitable for ballroom dancing. An introduction to some of the more popular set dances, with instruction on basic footwork, transitions between figures and moving to the phrasing of the music.

Please note this is not at Irish Arts Center | Location: Ripley-Grier Studios 520 Eighth Avenue (Bet. 36th & 37th Streets) 16th Floor, New York, NY 10018.

Students should wear comfortable shoes with leather soles that would be suitable for ballroom dancing.

Hard Shoe Irish Step Dancing
Laura Neese, Thursdays, 8 – 9 PM
$145 general / $115 member

8 weekly sessions beginning Thursday, April 13th, 2017

A boot-camp introduction to the basics of "hard shoe" Irish step dancing - some previous Irish or percussive dance experience (tap, flamenco, etc.) is recommended.  Dancers will learn the fundamentals of Irish percussive dance, starting with posture and alignment, conditioning, basic sound patterns, and progressing to treble reels, jigs, and even a hornpipe.  You'll learn a few solo steps, and we'll round out the session with a group dance - putting together all the pieces learned over the term!

Comfortable clothing and hornpipe shoes or tap shoes recommended.
